EXPERIENCES / PILBARA
Karijini National Park
Overview
- We take you far beyond the marked tracks and deep into the park.
- Enjoy incredible gorges that non-walkers will never see.
- A wonderful variety of landscapes: pools, gorges, spectacular cliff top views and more.
- Beautiful pools and campsites you share with no one but your walking companions.
- Day walks. While you need to carry full packs on most days, there are normally four or five days where you only need a day pack.
- Enjoy the daytime termperature. At this time of year, it's much cooler than in April.
- Want warmer water for the swims? cooler weather? Join our April bushwalking trip which follows the same itinerary.
This trip takes you into some of the most spectacular gorge country in Australia. It is divided into two sections, either of which can be done on its own. The first section walks into Munjina and Dales Gorge and the second section goes from Kalamino Gorge into Wittenoom Gorge and then out at Weano Gorge.
White tree trunks against a background of red rock and a deep blue sky are everywhere around us. Some of the walking is quick and easy, some is slow and scrubby.
The ever changing landscape contains more than enough to keep us happy. The gorges are increasingly breath-taking.
Years of bushwalking, exploring this area and trying different options have allowed us to create the best hike, making the most of our time here. Some years offer excellent wildflower displays, others less so, but there is always something in bloom. You are unlikely to see any big animals but there are lots of small ones if you keep your eyes open.
The geology is as interesting on a small scale as it is on a large one. The areas we visit have incredible outcrops containing some of the oldest rock formations that are exposed on the Australian continent.

WALK RATING - MODERATE
Terrain
The terrain is a mix of open woodland, rocky and swampy watercourses and spinifex scrub. There will be a number of short but steep climbs and one long, steep climb down into Wittenoom gorge. Some of the optional day walks will include sections where you need to go along narrow ledges. Some sections go through thick grass that hides rocks so you need to watch every step. If it weren’t for the fact that we often do day walks from base camps, this trip would rate as HARD/level 4 rather than MODERATE/level three.
Vegetation
Mostly quite open but the vegetation can vary dramatically from year to year. If, as is likely, we have to walk through unburnt spinifex, you will need heavy duty gaiters as the spinifex easily penetrates long trousers and lightweight gaiters.
Distance
4-6 hours per day

You need to carry one weeks worth of food.
